7 Essential Winter Wellness Tips to Stay Motivated and Balanced

Winter has officially arrived, and baby, it’s cold outside! While the season has its perks—comfy blankets, hot drinks, and comfort foods—it also brings challenges. Shorter days, colder weather, and the temptation to hit snooze on everything (including goals) can make staying motivated a struggle.

Living in Detroit, I’ve learned (and still learning) how to make the most of these cold months without losing balance. Since I work from home, I don’t have to face the cold every day, but when I do have to step out to take care of business, it’s a challenge every time. Maybe you’re in a chilly city like mine or just trying to stay grounded this winter, let me tell you how I keep things moving and find joy in the season.

Start Mornings Off Right

If you’ve ever experienced a Detroit winter morning, you know how hard it can be to leave the warmth of your bed. But over the years, I’ve found that creating a comfortable, intentional morning routine makes all the difference.

My Winter Morning Must-Haves

  • Sipping Hot Tea
In Detroit’s frosty mornings, a warm mug filled with my favorite herbal tea feels so comforting. Sometimes I’ll switch it up with hot cocoa when I need a little extra comfort.
  • Move Your Body (Just a Little)
I’m not saying you need to jump into full workout mode, but even 10 minutes of stretching or a short yoga flow helps shake off the morning chill. It’s a good way to warm up both physically and mentally. I like getting on my Merach squat machine in the morning because it helps wake and warm me up.

Why This Works

Starting the day with small, comforting regimens helps me feel ready to take on whatever winter throws my way.

Create a Productive (and Comfy) Space

When the cold keeps you indoors, your space becomes your escape. In Detroit, where snow days are a real thing, I’ve learned to create an environment that’s both functional and cozy. Since I work from home, my environment plays a huge role in keeping me motivated and focused, especially during the winter months.

How I Bring Comfort to My Workspace

  • My favorite fluffy throw blanket on my chair with my handy heater nearby.
  • A softly scented candle to set the mood.
  • A playlist of chill Neo-Soul or R&B to keep me focused and relaxed.

Why This Matters

Your space has a huge impact on your mindset. By making it inviting, I’m less tempted to crawl back into bed and more inspired to tackle my day—even if the snow is piling up outside my window.

Eat to Stay Warm and Energized

There’s something about winter that makes me crave comfort food 24/7, but I’ve learned how to find balance. For me, it’s all about warming meals that nourish my body while satisfying those cozy cravings.

My Favorite Winter Comfort Foods

  • Homemade Chili
This dish is hearty, flavorful, and packed with nutrients to keep me going on cold days.
  • Chicken Noodle Soup, Chicken Noodle Soup (With a Soda on the Side lol)
Nothing beats the classic. A warm bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup feels like a little taste of home.
  • Wholesome Breakfasts
Oatmeal topped with peanut butter or fruit is my winter breakfast staple during the workweek. As for the weekend, it’s more like pancakes, eggs, avocados, and bacon! Yum!

Hydration and Skin Care Are Essential

Detroit winters are cold, yes, but they’re also dry. My skin definitely feels the effects, which is why I double down on hydration—inside and out.

My Winter Skin Survival Kit

  • Agua! Gotta have my water.
  • A thick, hydrating moisturizer to combat dryness.
  • A gentle exfoliator to keep my skin smooth.
  • Lip balm, because the wind is not pretty.

As recommended by my esthetician, I switched to Dermalogica products and it has done wonders in rejuvenating my dry skin. Dermalogica offers professional-grade skincare products designed to hydrate, nourish, and improve skin health for all types.

Beat the Winter Blues

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or just the general winter blues can hit hard during this time of year, especially when the sun sets before dinnertime. Here’s how I’m keeping my mood in check.

Small Acts That Make a Big Difference

  • Soak Up the Sun (When It Shows Up)
On sunny days, making sure I get out for a bit lifts my spirits. There’s something about fresh air and sunlight that feels like a reset.
  • Brighten Your Space
When the days are gray, I make it a point to brighten up my home the best I can. Natural light may be limited during winter, but small changes can make a big difference.

My Tricks for a Brighter Space

  • Open the Curtains: Even if it’s overcast, letting in natural light makes a room feel less gloomy.
  • Add Warm Lighting: I use soft, warm-toned lamps to create a cozy yet uplifting atmosphere.
  • Reflect the Light: Placing mirrors strategically helps bounce light around the room, making it feel brighter and more inviting.

Stay Connected and Social

Winter makes it easy to hibernate, but staying connected with others is just as important as staying warm.

Host a Cute Get-Together or Game Night

Sometimes, I’ll invite a couple of friends over for a casual night in. We’ll sip on hot chocolate, play games, or just catch up while staying warm indoors. It’s low effort but always worth it.

Virtual Check-Ins

When it’s too cold to leave the house, reaching out to friends and family via text or FaceTime call helps me feel connected.

Make the Most of the Season

At the end of the day, winter is what you make of it. Living in Detroit, I’ve learned to find beauty in the season to keep my mind off the countdown to spring.

Little Joys That Keep Me Grounded

  • Watching snowflakes fall from my window while spinning a record and sipping my hot cocoa.
  • Lighting candles and writing more blog posts.
  • Reading books that I never seem to get to in the summer months.
